This Code of Ethical Conduct assists Independent Placenta Service Providers in carrying out their responsibilities to their clients, colleagues, the profession, and the community.
By defining and agreeing to these responsibilities, APPA Providers are required to uphold the highest possible standards in their professional competence, business practices, quality of services, and personal integrity.
Responsibilities to the Community
It is the responsibility of every IPSP to provide equal opportunity services in a rational, fair, and balanced manner. It is encouraged and wonderful service to the community to donate encapsulation services to a woman in need, when you are able. The IPSP should inform the local birth community of the availability of this service to promote and further maternal wellness.
Compliance with the Law and Health & Safety Regulations
1. It is the responsibility of each APPA Provider to identify and follow any applicable laws, rules and regulations within the provider’s service area. These laws, rules and regulations may pertain to placenta release, placenta transport, providing placenta encapsulation as a service, and more. The APPA Provider is expected to research and comply on all levels: each hospital, county, state, etc. When there are no laws, rules or regulations in place, the APPA Provider is expected to act in a professional, reasonable and responsible manner.
2. Health and Safety regulations can also vary by municipality, state, and so forth. Each APPA Provider must be aware of and follow any applicable health and safety regulations. Food Handler’s licenses and/or safe food handling certifications are good to have. Every APPA Providerhas appropriate training and certification, when applicable, in blood borne pathogens as they apply to the work of APPA Providers. Proper hygiene and sterilization practices must be in place and followed appropriately. Following proper preparation and handling guidelines reduce the risk of contamination of the placenta and to the provider.
3. It should be made clear on any materials of the APPA Providers including websites, promotional materials, contracts, and product labels that, “This service has not been evaluated by the FDA. The services offered are not clinical, pharmaceutical, or intended to diagnose or treat any condition. Families who choose to utilize these services take full responsibility for their own health and for researching and using capsules.”
Appropriate Treatment & Professional Conduct
1. It is the responsibility of every human being, including APPA Providers, to treat others as you would like to be treated. APPA Providers should treat people, especially colleagues, with respect, courtesy and fairness. Each APPA Provider should maintain the utmost professionalism and consideration when dealing with others including all colleagues, clients and the general public.
2. APPA Providers are expected to maintain the integrity of the profession by acting in accordance with this Code of Ethical Conduct. Each APPA Provider is encouraged to assist in advancing the knowledge of the profession and further the mission of expanding the rights of women to these services within their service area and nationally.
3. The scope of practice of each IPSP includes the safe and sanitary preparation of encapsulated placenta, with some providers offering other optional placenta services. It is the responsibility of each IPSP to practice within their scope. APPA Providers are not to prescribe medicines or any type of treatment, provide advice or services outside of their qualifications and training, or make claims of diagnosing or treating any condition.
1. Every APPA Provider has the right to set the fee for the services they offer. The national average for encapsulation services in the United States is $150-$400 for established providers, with separate fees for prints, tinctures, salves, etc. Some APPA Providers charge an allinclusive fee and clients can opt-in to the addition services with their encapsulation. It is strongly suggested that APPA Providers charge a reasonable rate for their service area. It is also strongly suggested that, when necessary, services are offered on a sliding scale so that every mother that would like the service can have access to it. It is strongly suggested that no client be turned away due to inability to pay.
2. The fee set by the APPA Provider must be clearly stated to the client prior to commencement of services. Using a clear contract, each APPA Provider should describe the services to be provided, the cost of services, payment arrangements and timing, and refund policies (if any). Some providers collect a non-refundable deposit with the balance due prior to or at the time of services. Be sure to have a clear policy in place for cancellations prior to the commencement of services and for instances when the mother is unable to have her placenta released for any reason, including chemical contamination and/or an adverse hospital policy.
Reliability & Competence
It is the responsibility of the APPA Provider to reliably and competently perform the agreed upon services for their clients and to refer out to other competent providers when necessary.
1. If the APPA Provider is not available at the necessary time for a contracted client, the APPA Provider must make appropriate arrangements to provide the services in a timely manner or make arrangements for another competent provider to service the client’s needs. If the APPA Provider receives service requests outside of the normal service area, the APPA Provider agrees to make a reasonable effort to refer the client to another provider or to a DIY Kit Provider.
2. To establish competence, an APPA Provider must complete an in-depth, hands-on training workshop through APPA or apprentice with an experienced provider and agree to adhere to the APPA Guidelines + Standards of practice. Continuing skills practice and placenta-related research and learning are appropriate means to maintain competence. Active participation in APPA allows for Provders to stay up to date with their knowledge and understanding of this work and up to date with the best practices as well.
Confidentiality & Privacy
All information provided to the APPA Provider by the clients and potential clients is to be held in the strictest confidence. Every client and potential client has the right to their express privacy.
Sharing/selling of any client’s personal information with third parties is strictly prohibited.
1. Data collection for statistical purposes is allowed with the permission of the client. Data that can be collected includes number of capsules made, chosen method of preparation, the dosage utilized by client, noted effects as reported by the client, comments on services rendered & provider feedback. Secure online surveys are an efficient way for clients to opt-in to your data collection and supply their responses.
