APPA just keeps turning out brilliant and talented graduates! Meet Jenny Thompson!
Jenny is a birth doula, placenta encapsulator, lactation counselor, and childbirth educator, and has served the Acadiana, LA area for almost 10 years. Before birthwork became her life, Jenny worked on environmental and ocean policy, graduating from Louisiana State University in 1998 and the University of Washington in 2003. She has two rambunctious boys and homeschools her oldest son.
Jenny was gracious enough to answer our questions about why she chose APPA!
Tell us about your practice; where you’re located, some stats, etc. Tell us how your practice has changed or grown since joining APPA. Share some of your successes.
I’ve been encapsulating for almost 8 years, mostly learning from the New Placenta Group and relying on my Food prep card and science background to carry me through! I was happy to find some of those same women again through one of my business partners who finished the course and loved it! I am so thankful for being surrounded by a great group of supportive people. APPA definitely upped my game and credibility, which is what I wanted. As one of the owners of MotherBirth, we really want to become one of the first groups to be all APPA certified! We are very close to reaching this goal!
In what way has being an APPAC/being part of APPA benefited you as a placenta prep provider?
It has given me credibility, and it will also give our doula group credibility. The access to the scientific articles and latest science helps us to answer our community’s questions with assurance, and reassures our clients that we are the safest in the area!
Do you have any advice for those interested in becoming a placenta prep provider?
The hard work will be all worth it. Find an accountability partner at the start; I wish I would have! It helped tremendously!
Why did you choose APPA as your certifying organization?
My business partner, Tiffany Wyatt mentioned APPA to me and recommended I look at your website. Once I saw the names of women I knew or recognized online, I was hooked and knew it was credible and worth the money and time.
What did you like the most about APPA?
It was very extensive! Very professional, the staff is super responsive and supportive. Melody was my mentor and she rocked!
How has this training changed your practice or added to your knowledge?
There were a few things missing from my practice, so I corrected those. I love having the latest science at my fingertips, as well as a community of practitioners to lean on.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
I love birth and mothers!
Do you have any other birth, babies, parenting related business ventures? Tell us about them and we’ll help you spread the word.
In addition to encapsulating placentas for nearly 8 years, I have been a birth doula for 9 years and a lactation counselor for 3 years. I also teach a childbirth education class called “Comfort Measures” in Lafayette, LA.
